Tampa Officially Welcomes Norwegian Cruise Line

The Tampa Port Authority on Sunday officially welcomed Norwegian Star during a plaque exchange ceremony, commemorating Tampa as Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest homeport.

Port officials, local tourism leaders, more than 100 travel agents and local media toured the ship, which is sailing seven-day cruises through April 8 to Roatán, Belize City, Costa Maya and Cozumel.

Norwegian Star began its Tampa deployment on Oct. 16. The vessel is expected to bring an estimated 130,000 passengers to the Gulf of Mexico homeport, where passenger movements are projected to reach 950,000 in 2012.

Over the course of the season, it is estimated that passenger and crew spending resulting from Norwegian Star will have an impact of more than $8m on the local economy.

Norwegian will continue to operate from Tampa in the 2012/13 season when Norwegian Dawn replaces Norwegian Star in November.
