Norwegian Adds a Third Alaska Ship in 2013

Norwegian Cruise Line is adding a third Alaska ship in summer 2013. Norwegian Sun, sailing seven-day itineraries between Vancouver and Whittier, will join Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Pearl, marking the first time the company has offered three vessels in the 49th state since 2009.

The line is also introducing land packages that can be combined with Norwegian Sun’s itinerary.

Norwegian’s summer deployment additionally features four ships sailing in Europe, including the continuation of two year-round vessels and the debut of Norwegian Star in the Baltic replacing Norwegian Sun, along with two ships cruising to Bermuda.

Most of these sailings go on sale to top travel partners and Latitudes Rewards members today, and to the general public on Thursday.

‘With the strides made by the state government, we felt the time was right to add a third ship in Alaska, and give our guests the once in a lifetime opportunity to see more of this incredible destination,’ said Kevin Sheehan, president and ceo of Norwegian.

Beginning May 20, 2013, Norwegian Sun’s northbound itinerary departs Vancouver on Mondays and will cruise the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier and call at Ketchikan, Skagway and Juneau. On southbound itineraries from Whittier the ship will cruise the Inside Passage, Sawyer Glacier and Hubbard Glacier and stop at Ketchikan, Skagway, Juneau and Icy Strait Point.

Beginning May 18, 2013, Norwegian Jewel—which offers Nickelodeon family programming—will sail 18 Sawyer Glacier itineraries from Seattle every Saturday with stops at Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria.

Norwegian Pearl begins a series of 18 Glacier Bay itineraries from Seattle every Sunday with stops at Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria.

New for the 2013 Alaska season are four cruise-tour options that give the opportunity to combine a pre- or post-cruise land package with Norwegian Sun’s cruises from Whittier. The fully escorted tours range from four to six days and feature two nights in Denali National Park.
