Holland America debuts Captain Morgan's bar on private island

Holland America Line opened what it described as a novel new bar experience, Captain Morgan on the Rocks Island Bar, at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.

The bar is designed as a 100ft long, twin-decked, three-masted schooner that appears to have washed up on the cay's white sand beach. Seating up to 326 patrons, the bar sports nautical artifacts and references to swashbuckler Captain Morgan's exploits in these waters more than 350 years ago.

Half Moon Cay is consistently rated as HAL's top destination on Caribbean cruises, said evp Rick Meadows, who added that the bar provides a fun and charming element.

Matthew Sams, vp Caribbean relations for HAL, is responsible for the operations of Half Moon Cay and oversaw the concept, design and construction of the new bar. Island staff handled the construction. HAL collaborated with Diageo Global Travel & Middle East, the drinks business that created Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum in 1983.

Located near the island's Food Pavilion, the bar features outdoor seating on two awning-covered, themed decks. The upper deck has sweeping views and ‘cannons' that serve as water misters to keep patrons cool. The lower deck has rum casks for seats, palm leaf-styled ceiling fans and images ‘burnt' in to the wood that depict the legend of Captain Morgan.
