These Magellanic penguins comprise the largest colony of penguins in Chile. For a wildlife-centric trek, head to Torres del Paine, deemed a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Castro is the welcoming capital of the Chiloe Province, best explored on foot. It is home to a total of 16 churches in and around the island and recognized by UNESCO for their unique cultural value. Many were constructed almost entirely from native wood in the Chilote architecture style with each one having its own individual color scheme. Once you've admired the Neo-Gothic and Neo-Classical architecture of the churches, wander through the Plaza de Armas where you'll find a handcraft fair selling all sorts of wonderful items. You can also stop for a visit at Chiloe's Contemporary Art Museum.

Along the Lake District of southern Chile lies Puerto Montt, a gateway to the Andes mountains and Patagonian fjords. Hike the Alerce Andino National Park, where the largest-known living tree stands at 196 feet tall and has been around for more than 3,600 years. Visit the Angelmo markets for authentic handicrafts and to choose from the catch of the day. Stop by Cotele on Avenida Juan Soler Manfredini for mouthwatering cuts of meat, barbecue, and Chilean grill. Take a 90-minute drive outside of port to come face to face with Osorno volcano, its image reminiscent of Japan's Mount Fuji.

In Valparaiso, walk in the footsteps of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda and immerse yourself in its proud naval history at Plaza Sotomayor. For an unforgettable view of the city, ascend on one of its 15 funiculars. Well worth the journey inland, you can be at the center of Santiago in approximately 90 minutes. Be sure to see Palacio de La Moneda, the presidential palace, and view the Plaza de Armas with its 18th-century cathedral, along with stylish residential areas around San Cristobal Hill. Museum lovers will be drawn to the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino and Museo Nacional de Historia Natural, among others.
