Day 2 - Monday - May 8, 2023
Portland, United States
Portland, United States
On a peninsula in Casco Bay, this darling of the Pine Tree State - formerly its capital - lends urban sensibility to the wild splendor of the craggy coastline beyond. Portland is the largest city and most important seaport of Maine. Its excellent harbor is closer to Europe than any other transatlantic port in the United States. The poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland in 1807, in what is now called the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, which had been built around 1785 by his grandfather. The Maine Historical Society maintains the house as a museum. Cyrus H. K. Curtis was born in Portland in 1850. Having achieved wealth in publishing, he was able, after a fire damaged the Portland City Hall in 1908, to offer a grand organ to be placed in the new city hall. His two provisos were that it be built by the Austin Organ Company of Hartford and that it be a memorial to Hermann Kotzschmar, a close friend of the Curtis family and the organist at the First Parish Church Unitarian Universalist in Portland for 47 years. The Kotzschmar Memorial Organ remains a feature of the Portland City Hall to this day. At the Old Port waterfront, restaurants and revelry now fill the 19th-century warehouses. Stroll along cobblestone streets and breathe in the fresh scent of the sea. Perhaps catch the strains of some bluegrass or blues from a nearby bar. At Cape Elizabeth just to the south, the Portland Head Light stands as a beacon to the ocean's travelers.
Day 3 - Tuesday - May 9, 2023
Great Lakes Navigation
Great Lakes Navigation
These waters are home to a vast variety of wildlife - trout, salmon, walleye, smallmouth bass, crawfish, freshwater sponges, and sea lamprey, to name a few. That buffet attracts raptors such as hawks and bald eagles and waterfowl such as ducks, swans, and geese. Relax and enjoy the view on your own time on this peaceful lake cruising day. Sip a midmorning consomme, breathe in the fresh lake air on the upper deck, share convivial conversation with other guests, or delve into a captivating book as you look forward to yet another astounding sunset on the water.
Day 4 - Wednesday - May 10, 2023
Halifax, Canada
Halifax, Canada
Nova Scotia is one of the 13 provinces and territories of Canada. It is one of the three Maritime provinces and one of the four Atlantic provinces. It is also one of few places in the world where you can enjoy bustling city life and coastal relaxation on the same day. Life in its capital of Halifax revolves around the sea and you will encounter the profound sense of maritime history that emits from the docks, buildings, and coastal scenery. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 offer their own perspectives. American Queen Voyages guests can drink in the delightful mix of historic and modern in the beating heart of this lively seaport where bustling streets slope down toward indigo brine and oceanic splendor, stretching east into oblivion. The fortified summit of Citadel Hill - never needed for actual protection - stands as a testament to the peaceful nature of the nation. Bathe in the city's botanical beauty at the Public Gardens. Nearby Peggys Cove, one of the most iconic and picturesque coastal villages in Canada, welcomes visitors to discover its many specialty shops, historic attractions, and scenic views. In April 1912, Halifax became the center of recovery operations following the sinking of White Star Line's RMS Titanic. Two Halifax-based ships were sent to recover bodies. The majority of recovered victims, 150 bodies, were buried in three Halifax cemeteries, 121 being buried in Fairview Lawn followed by the nearby Baron de Hirsch and Mount Olivet cemeteries.

Day 6 - Friday - May 12, 2023
Charlottetown, Canada
Charlottetown, Canada
Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of Canada's Prince Edward Island. Charlottetown is situated on its namesake harbor, which is formed by the confluence of three rivers in the central part of the island's south shore. Due to its strategic location, the port was frequented by Indigenous peoples well before the arrival of Europeans. Charlottetown has the distinction of being the birthplace of Canada. It was here at the Charlottetown Conference in 1864, where delegates from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and the Canadas convened to discuss what was originally meant to be Maritime Union but soon became a union of British North America. Charlottetown may be relatively small, but it's an equipoise of big-city energy with quiet spaces and emerald pastures. The streetscape with a centrally planned downtown core containing many whimsical, Victorian-era houses and buildings is an attraction, as well as the waterfront with its rose-gold shorelines and beachside vistas. Other highlights include the provincial legislature at Province House, which hosted the Charlottetown Conference, as well as Founders' Hall, a recently redeveloped railway maintenance building which now houses an interactive trip through history tracing the development of Canada as a nation. Discover the spirit and natural displays that make this inspirational port so special. Soak in the romance and nostalgia of postcard-perfect streetscapes. Wander along a boardwalk where lobster boats and sailboats cozy up. It's got all the charm and hospitality PEI is famous for, plus ocean-to-table cuisine and an arts and culture scene that seduce visitors.

Day 9 - Monday - May 15, 2023
Quebec City, Canada
Quebec City, Canada
The historic district of Old Quebec (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985) or what is today know as Quebec City transports visitors. Just moments in the sleek gentility of this marvelous destination, and you'll feel as if you were whisked across the Atlantic for a whirlwind European holiday. The old-world charm of this ramparted enclave sounds a siren's call to visitors. From a raised mound of earth, Chateau Frontenac - now a hotel - towers toward the heavens over Upper Town, evoking the grandeur of a country estate. Traces of the city's English heritage can be seen in the mixed borders of the living artwork within the Joan of Arc Garden. Perched atop a cliff above the Saint Lawrence River, Quebec City is a destination unlike any other in North America. The only fortified city north of Mexico and the birthplace of French Canada dates to the 17th century. With its rich history, cobblestone streets, historic castles, picturesque architecture, and seductive food and wine scene, it's easy to appreciate why Quebec City draws more than 4.6 million tourists per year. Whether you travel for cultural or historical enrichment, or you prefer to enjoy charcuterie at a charming bistro, aperitif in hand, there's something for everyone in Quebec's capital city. If you prefer outdoor activities to get your blood pumping, head to the Montmorency River, just outside of town. Atop Montmorency Falls (99 feet higher than Niagara), test your fear of heights by crossing the suspension bridge that hangs over the crest.
Day 10 - Tuesday - May 16, 2023
Montreal, Canada
Montreal, Canada
Approximately 31 miles long by 10 miles wide, with a 755-foot mountain occupying its center, Montreal was a land mass inhabited by the Iroquois who had lived in Quebec for thousands of years. In 1535, Jacques Cartier from France was among the first to explorer the island. Cartier and his men climbed to the highest point to place a cross, claiming the mountain for France and naming it Mont-Royal. The city of Ville-Marie, founded by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, was later renamed Montreal. In 1759, French colonists were defeated and Montreal was later occupied and administered by Great Britain. Despite being conquered by the British, French Montrealers continued to flourish and exist as the majority on the island over the subsequent decades. Many French Montrealers on the island today still have the last name of a British ancestor. A large number of English-speaking Montrealers also have French last names. When considering metropolitan sophistication, Montreal comes to mind as its geography is as diverse as its population. Some 120-plus cultural communities comprise the city's multilingual fabric. An included tour showcases attractions that are urban wonders yet steeped in history. Guests also have time to visit museums, boutiques, and galleries. Optional tours take visitors to the Mount Royal Overlook for a bird's-eye view of the city, then slip beneath the metropolis to explore Underground City and its many shops, art venues, and bistros. Marvel at ornate edifices like Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal, which is sculpted, painted, and gilded in gold leaf.
