Today we have a guest post from Susan Bodack of InStyleSwimwear.com. She shares with us some ideas on what you should, and should not, bring with you on your next cruise!

Cruising is a fabulous way to travel with budget in mind. Not only can you choose to book an easy, inclusive cruise, but you can enjoy great food, top-notch entertainment, plenty of pool and tan time, and the experience of exploring multiple destinations. Whether you've been saving up for years or you're breaking into the old rainy day fund, winter is the perfect time for a cruise getaway.

After you choose your tropical paradise and finalize your travel plans, it's time to pack your bags! Consider your must-have cruise essentials ahead of time, so you can set sail without a care in the world.

Packing for a Cruise: 10 Must-Have Cruise Essentials

1. Sunscreen

Obviously that whole tropical thing wouldn't be quite as "tropical" without the sun? and a lot of it. While we are all for a gorgeous glow, nobody likes getting sunburned. Even if you generally "tan easily" or "never get burned," you'll be closer to the equator and exposed to much more intense rays than you're accustomed to, so make sure to pack plenty of sunscreen and aloe. If you're prone to breakouts, don't forget a facial sunscreen, and whatever you do, don't forget the lip balm with SPF.

2. Swimwear

Swimwear and tropical cruises go hand-in-hand, as you're headed for miles of beautiful sandy beaches in tropical ports as well as plenty of pool time on board. You need to be prepared to flaunt your best assets! Since swimsuits are so lightweight and easy to pack, don't be afraid to take several mix and match separates and styles, keeping in mind any activities you might plan to do. More supportive pieces with extra coverage are great for any athletic activities, while your itsy bitsy bikinis are perfect for lounging poolside with a cocktail in hand.

3. Cover-Ups

When you're not soaking up the sun, it's best to cover up. In addition to choosing cover-ups that complement your swimsuits, also choose styles that are more practical. Pack styles that can multitask for both the beach and street, day and night. For example, a cute little sundress or long and lean maxi are perfect for walking to and from the cruise ship pool, shopping in the streets, and sipping cocktails at dusk. Whatever you do, don't be that girl who walks through the streets in just her bathing suit! Coordinate your cover-ups with your other "street clothes" so you don't over-pack.

4. Footwear

Consider your footwear carefully, as they typically take up a ton of room in your suitcase. Think about what you plan to do. Perhaps you plan to go hiking or hit the gym - a pair of sneakers is a must. In addition, you'll need 1-2 pairs of comfortable flip-flops or sandals for day. For formal occasions or fancy dinners, you'll need 1-2 pair of wedges or heels. Again, coordinating your footwear with your cover-ups and clothing is key.

5. Hats & Sunglasses

As we mentioned before, a tropical cruise means brutal rays, and nothing is more painful than a lobster-like sunburn. Your eyes can be particularly vulnerable with the rays bouncing off the water. A hat and some sunglasses are essential for cruising. Try a floppy hat or fedora that collapses and packs nicely. Add a pair of oversized sunnies to complete your chic cruise look.

6. Formalwear

Make sure to check your cruise itinerary and policies to see if you'll need to pack for formal dinner night(s). While it isn't the most convenient thing in the world, you can look for ways to make packing easier. Consider packing a solid-colored dress that you can wear by itself with jewelry one night and then top it off with a belt, colorful scarf or shawl a different night. Or pack a dressy skirt with two different tops to help change up your look.

7. Accessories

A woman needs to have her accessories. Period. Costume jewelry is perfect for the pool and daytime excursions, while your more elegant pieces should be reserved for your formal nights and fancy dinner dates. Choose pieces that can help change up your ensembles, such as colorful scarves, colored bib necklaces, beaded bracelets, etc. Have some fun styling your outfits prior to packing.

8. Cameras & Tech Gear

To document your adventures, you'll probably want to bring your camera. For those who need to check email, get some work done or read while they're lounging around, consider bringing your tablets, notebooks, e-readers, etc. Double-check to see if your ship offers wi-fi, and of course, don't forget your chargers!

9. Toiletries & Medications

Never assume that the cruise ship will have all of your beauty products and toiletries. Pack your essentials while considering space and travel restrictions. Be sure to take a good, hydrating lotion, as the sea, sun, and sand can leave you with parched skin. Make sure to take any daily prescriptions as well as a few OTC drugs for your stomach, sea sickness, headaches, and sinus issues that may pop up while traveling.

10. Essential Extras

Last but not least are the real essentials and extras. Don't forget your cruise documents, travel itineraries, ID cards, medical cards, credit cards, debit cards, passport, emergency contacts, cash, and tickets. Some bug spray may not hurt if you plan to go trekking into the jungle. And of course, an empty souvenir bag to hold all of your inevitable purchases. Happy cruising!
